Community members raise concerns about Volusia County Schools' recently approved rezoning
Community members raise questions and concerns of segregation, inequities and lack of transparency stemming from the district's recently approved mass rezoning plans.

...Cassie Gonyer — a parent of two current Turie T. Small students; the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair for the Volusia County Council of Parent-Teacher Association; and a District Two candidate for the Volusia County School Board — noted that this concern is heavily concentrated in Daytona Beach’s Midtown neighborhood.
“The fear is that all the students in Midtown that are predominantly Black are going to be put into one school that won’t be taken care of,” she said.
Gonyer, however, believes this rezoning is a “great first step” for the district because it will make travel more equitable.
“Predominantly Black children (were) being bused out to predominantly white schools. It was never the other way around. No students were brought into the neighborhood to try to integrate into the neighborhood schools," she said. “So the hope is by bringing students back to their neighborhood school, travel will now be more equitable.”
